Another day older and deeper in debt.... as the Tenn. Ernie Ford song 16 Tons line goes 8)

I've not been out much at all lately so it was good to get out for a while.

I'm fascinated with Clyde's feathers. When you're very close to him you can see the myriad of different types of feathers he has.
Everything from the big long primary wing feathers to the tiny, wispy hair like feathers on his head---all "coal black".
As Teapot noted Clyde has a slight purplish "sheen" which is evident when the light is right.

Brings up a fascinating subject I've done some reading on.
Humans have only 3 color dimension vision. Most mammals only 2 color dimension vision.
Ravens like many birds see in 4 color dimensions. They have four different "cones" for color reception in their retina.
Red, green, blue, and ultraviolet. Therefore ravens can see in color hues that humans cannot possibly see or even imagine!!
We have no clue how birds actually see not only their world, but how they see each other.

Ravens all look alike to us humans. However, we can only speculate how they look to each other.
This extra color dimension allows birds to see and identify each other very easily.
This has been demonstrated in species of birds like ravens where both sexes look alike.

I could go on and on talking about these fascinating birds but I have to go to work for a little while! :)

I'll try to get out for some "non raven" reporting as soon as I can.

Thanks again for everyone's compliments.

Many Happy Birthdays to those who have one coming!!

Happy Birthday, Pete! Sorry I'm late to the party, but I'm unfamiliar with Clyde the Magnificent. Is he a wild friend?

Clyde is a wild raven.
That said, Clyde is a fairly old raven and has been "thoroughly people-lized" over the years.
Park staff are very familiar with "Clyde" although some park folks call him "Charlie".
Over the years Clyde has been caught raiding all sorts of vehicles left open/unattended.
One day as I turned into the lot, Clyde was busy pulling on a large black plastic garbage type bag out the open hatchback of a car parked by the outhouses.
Bonnie, as usual, was on the ground behind the car acting like a "lookout"... hence my name for them.

Bonnie, according to one person who claims to know, is a relatively recent mate. This may account for her "shyness".
Clyde's prior mate allegedly having been killed by one of the bald eagles nesting near the head of lake McDonald.
An eagle killing a raven, especially one living near its nest would not be unusual at all.

Literally 10's of thousands of people pass through B&C's "territory" around Lake McDonald every year.
And so these birds have become used to people---for better or worse.

However that said, these are two pretty smart birds, as birds go.
They pretty much leave the lodge area when it comes to nesting time( in my experience).
Until then I hope to get more pictures of these two very striking and interesting birds before they nest.
I love watching them and observing all the nuances of their behavior towards each other.

Clyde is stunningly handsome, especially in the photo with the snow on him. The feathers that look like lower eyelashes are particularly fetching.

I finally got a decent picture of this lil guy yesterday, a Stellar's jay. He's been hanging around lately.
Also have some video clips from the North Fork to put up later.
They are the Geezer's decidedly lame attempt at those 1 minute outdoor scenes we used to see at the end of Charles Kuralt's Sunday Morning News. I loved those clips back then.

I named this lil guy "Stinker". Dunno why. It's "Southern thang" I guess. He just looks like a "lil stinker" to me

Who dat ugly man pointin' that thing at me???

Happy belated birthday Pete.

No secret societies going on here, just in the past, there have been some incidents that have happened so personal information is available to other chatters that is all, don't make it more than it is.

By the way, duck, watch out for that black helo, might be coming for YOU!!!

Pete,

Although Charles Kuralt is no longer on earth, the CBS Sunday Morning News Show still has those nature clips at the end of the show. I love those clips too!

Thanks Dave :)
It really is nice to roll out of bed each new morning, and I thank the good Lord for it too.
Yeah, I know why things are done like they are. Sometimes "subtlety" doesn't come across well on here for me. :?
I don't worry too much about the black copters--not yet anyway. 8)
I might worry after I get my website going---where there will be no "safe places" for anyone.
Coming soon

I haven't had TV for going on 4 years so I'm glad to hear CBS is still doing the nature clips.
I always thought it was a great ending to the show.
Very calming and relaxing after the often contentious news....was for me anyway.

I enjoy making my videos, but....
Don't expect that sort of originality or quality from my efforts.
I'm working on my technique. The ones I did yesterday were mostly tripod shots.
That almost always improves most scenes imo.
The "skill" I need to work on the most is: "being more patient" in looking for and setting up shots.
I ain't the most patient lad on the planet 8)

Keeping my yap shut also helps for "nature scenes".
I tend to forget that nothing I say will improve the viewers "experience" when watching these "nature scenes"....
If I do them well.

Take more time looking for and setting up good clips.
Use my tripod; the bubble level is a great aid along with grid lines.
A tilted horizon really sucks on a long wide pan.

We'll see how I did later. I haven't really looked at the clips closely yet.

These clips didn't turn out too well. The close up ones were better I think.
Lighting was kind of flat for anything scenic or in the distance.
They "are what they are" as the wag once said.
All are ~1 minute

This is just a short video I made on the drive over to Lake McDonald today.
It will show you how little snow we have around here at the present time.
Runs 2 1/2 minutes

This clip runs about 4:50
B&C plus a short chat with one of the National Park Service LEOs.

She is back on duty here on the West Side after some leave time.
She has worked winters on this side for several years now.
I've seen her occasionally while out around the Apgar-Lake McDonald area the last few winters.
Also seen her over at Many Glacier where she works summers.
I forgot her name. 8)
