GNP Office Dates

I think this has been asked before... and I'm too blind (or lazy) to find it. When the backcountry permit office says open till "Mid September" what does that mean? I'm just kind of assuming that means September 18 (sunday) but curious if I was wrong, or someone had a better idea of what that might mean this year.
