Dept. of Interior moves to allow e-bikes in national parks

Probably of limited impact in Glacier, but I thought this might be of interest based on Pete's run-in with a motorized mono-board while hiking: https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/interior-department-moves-electric-bikes-national-parks-public/story?id=65293209 Here's the memo itself: https://www.nps.gov...

Re: Bad Visitor Behavior at GNP

I wonder if the Rangers are less worried about the Buttheads getting mad at them per se, then their bosses putting them under the bus when someone complains. Acadia banned motorized anything on their carriage roads as well, and from what I understand they do enforce that rule - but they do it with R...

Re: Bad Visitor Behavior at GNP

I saw the video of the jackwaggons golfing off the GTTS. Really wish someone had gone over and given them a good shove  It's not just National Parks, either, we've been problems with illegal parking, trash, and people going off trail in fragile alpine zones in the White Mountains in New Hampsh...

Nut-case version of peak-bagging? Trying to be a drunken jack-wagon in all the National Parks?

Re: 2018 permitting fiasco.

What Pete said - we got to Apgar at 6:00 AM during our trip and there were already people in line. Fortunately, I'd done my homework (thanks to Pete) and had all my info and my forms ready, and we got what we wanted. I'm sure this is posted elsewhere, but you can keep tabs on what backcountry sites ...

Re: Food, toiletries, and garbage storage in backcountry

I'm not entirely clear on the use of bear canisters. When a bear pole is present, do you still just plan on leaving it on the ground (that would seem dumb). Do you bring along another bag to hang it in? Do you just hang your backpack with it in it? We did not bring our bear canisters to Glacier whe...

Congratulations to those who scored spots! And to the newbies out there: please don't give up hope. There is plenty of time for the inevitable slew of cancellations to come through. Just keep watching the availability page for new openings...especially as deposit and fee balance deadlines a...

Re: Bill to amend Wilderness Act

Are those items being prohibited now? I know in NH they used horse-drawn wagons as part of a bridge-removal project in the Pemi Wilderness Area. Not the same as a bike or a wheelchair, but if people care capable of understanding a horse counts as "non-motorized" they'd figure it out with a...

Re: Big fee increases may be in the future...

They do that for a lot of parks/beaches around here, too, although I'm sure Glacier being a federal property would complicate that some. Again, though - and maybe my perception is skewed by living in the Boston area where the cost of living generally is a lot higher - is a $25 per year bump on an an...

Re: Big fee increases may be in the future...

(Try comparing THAT to the cost to take your family to Busch Gardens or Disney World or any number of other "attractions" for just a day...) Or heck, parking at some of the beaches here in Mass. for a single DAY. The fees don't seem that unreasonable despite this being a steep jump...

It's a tremendously moving ceremony to begin with (I had tears in my eyes when my partner had hers at Faneuil Hall here in Boston), but to be sworn in in such a beautiful setting? How cool!

Re: From Inciweb: Evacuation Warning Due to Wind Shift

I'm curious, what to they do about back country sites during an evac - do they send rangers in to tell people to bail?
