Re: Favorite backcountry camp site

I would second the hike to Morning Star .... It was on my backcountry hike this summer. Loved the lake, including the night visit and morning visit of several moose. A hike to Cutbank/Pitamakin/Dawson Passes would be a great day hike ... includes some of the best views in the Park along the relative...

Great story about Kintla Ranger Lyle.

Re: GPI loses concession contract to Xanterra ...

Haven't seen any comment by Park/GPI on whether or not the East Side Shuttles will continue.

They have been great and have allowed me to do some BC trips that would have been difficult
to do otherwise.

Re: Swimming in Lake MacDonald?

I swam in Lake McDonald several times ... last summer and in summers previous.

I've swam both at Fish Creek and at Lake McDonald Lodge areas.
Always refreshing. Went for a long swim in the lake last summer, rather than just
splashing off shore.

Time frame - early August

Re: luggage storage

I know yosemite has specific bear boxes to store luggage/food in parking areas before you head into the backcountry. Maybe we should ask Glacier to do the same thing. It was certainty is useful. You weren't supposed to lock them, because multiple people were sharing the storage area. I stored clothe...

Re: Quick / Favorite 1-Nighters?

The trail to the campground on the north shore of Lake McDonald is a pain to hike.
Many, many downed trees from the recent fire & not much of an effort to clear the
trail. On a day hike last summer, I got plenty tired of going around, over, and under
trees.

Found the book on line ... I believe it to be original. Looks like a cast off from some library.
I did search specifically for the title.

Re: 2013 BC permits

note for walk-ups ... all the back ranger offices post a list the night before as to what sites are available. You can then try to plan
your trip from that list. Have several options and you'll be likely to get one of them.

Re: History Wednesday - a bit late

Here's a link to one of the older maps of the area. It is the map for the Flathead Forest Reserve 1899. The actual map is at the U of Montana. http://dtl.lib.umt.edu/cdm/fullbrowser/collection/mtmaps/id/298/rv/singleitem Note the differences in the names of various geographic features Lincoln Creek ...
