Re: Glacier eating spots

Of the original list, I've only eaten at the Two Dog Flats. I like their breakfasts (I'm a big fan of Montana Oats, brown sugar and fruit in the morning). Coffee is ok, but nothing great (sits around too long on the hot plate). The dinners are ok to good (yes, they do make good burgers, and I've had...

Re: "Missing" trails

That is a really cool photo of the falls being blown upwards! A few years ago my daughter and I hiked up Lunch Creek from the road. We found that the trail was ok until you get to that shelf where the falls come over. Then it looks like the trail goes up into a part of the shelf that crumbled down.....

Re: Ptarmigan Tunnel & Iceberg Lake

Hey, I forgot about that...yeah, the afternoon light on the other side of the tunnel really helps for the great photos. I was just looking at my pictures from that side of the tunnel, and in the late afternoon it looks fabulous.

Re: Ptarmigan Tunnel & Iceberg Lake

I agree that it does look different when it's in shadow. I think it lends a more moody feel. The quality of icebergs is something that my daughter and I talk about alot. It depends on the time of year, and often it also depends on what type of year it's been. In really hot years preceded by light wi...

Re: Maps etc.

Wow...those pics from the DeLorme are pretty impressive. What's the deal with the shadow on the topo map? Is it something the software added?

Re: East side

I'm intrigued by the cabins/cottages at Lake McDonald Lodge. Looking on the Glacier Park Inc. website, I see that there are 2 prices listed: small cottage ($118) and large cottage ($168). How big is the difference?

Re: Ptarmigan Tunnel & Iceberg Lake

Yeah, I agree that the actual best choice depends on the kind of day it is. But all other things being equal, I think that if I did it again, I'd still pick Iceberg Lake first. The reason is that the hike from the Ptarmigan hike is a bit more work (I think), so I liked coming down knowing that it wa...

Re: Ptarmigan Tunnel & Iceberg Lake

We did them together several years ago. Start early. And don't get discouraged by the long uphill from the Ptarmigan turnoff (from the Iceberg trail). It's pretty steady uphill (or rather, upmountain) for quite a while, but it's well worth it. If your a flatlander like us (from the midwest, at zero ...

Re: East side

As far as the East side is concerned, I still like the Rising Sun cabins (err, cottages is what they call them). Nestled in the trees under a mountain, and right next to Two Dog Flats (open grassy area with lots of deer, elk and coyotes). Right across the road is St. Marys Lake. There is a general s...

Re: Favorite Glacier guide books

I like the Herrero book a lot (as far as books on bear attacks go). I wish he'd update it: there's a lot more data available now. For hiking in the park, I still prefer Molvar's book (now in 3rd edition). For general info on the park, I like "Exploring Glacier National Park", but I think i...

Re: Ever wonder what's REALLY at the end.......

Wow! That photo in the Hungry Horse news is spectacular! A great shot of nearly the entire rainbow, and I think I see a double rainbow. Actually all of the pictures in this topic are spectacular...makes me wonder what I'm doing wrong with my camera... I guess it means that I gotta spend more time in...

Re: Ever wonder what's REALLY at the end.......

Wow Kathy...that shot is spectacular...well, both shots actually. The one with the rainbow ending on the Glacier Park sign is gonna go up on my office wall. At work I always talk people's ears off about Glacier Park, so this will serve to give them my point of view right away!

Re: Iceberg Dead Ahead!

Yah, I've been there sometimes in August and there was only open water, and some years it's been nearly half-covered with ice (or so it seemed). I remember once I was there in early July, and it was very thick with ice, so I've always assumed that earlier is best.. But maybe it takes til August to b...

Re: Otokomi Lake?

I've taken this hike, and I quite liked it. It was interesting because you go through a variety of types of terrain. And there is lots of waterfalls on Rose Creek, but for many of them you have to go off-trail to get a good picture. When I went, it was August, and we ran into a blizzard up at the la...

Re: photo editing software

Yeah, the price was the reason that she bought it. Plus, she'd heard some nasty things about CS3 in user reviews and comments. She figures if she really gets into it, she'll upgrade after they fix the problems.
